How do I get a library card?
Library cards are free to anyone residing in the Rio Grande Valley. This includes those who are only here for a few months.
Please bring one of the following when applying for a card:
- Valid Driver's license or I.D driver's.
- Texas Dept. of Public Safety Identification.
- Current telephone or utility bill.
- Active military identification card (for personnel living on base).
- Checkbook or savings account passbook.
- Current Voter's Registration Card.
- Current automobile insurance card.
- Medicaid card, Veteran's Administration card, Medicare or health insurance card with patron's local address.
-Persons without proof of address can have a postcard sent to their home. When they return the postal issued by the library, they can receive a library card.
-A person of any age may apply for a library card. Children under the age of 18 need to have a parent or guardian present when applying for a card.

Processing charge for lost item(s) $15.00
No library cards are issued the final 15 minutes before closing!
What are the checkout limits on library materials... ?
You may check out 10 items per card including only 3 videos and 4 cassettes and CDs.
All items are checked out for a two week time period.

Can materials be renewed?
Yes, items may be renewed if they are not reserved for another patron. Renewal periods are for two weeks and a total of two consecutive renewals are permitted.
To renew an item it is necessary to bring it in.
Can my library card be used at any other library?
The Library Card my be used at all Hidalgo County Public Libraries except Donna Public Library.

Can library materials be reserved?
A reserve can be placed on any item that is checked out, or on order. If an item is reserved, it can not be renewed.
Currently, reserves may be placed by telephone or in person. Please ask the staff at the Circulation Desk or Reference Desk for assistance in placing a reserve. Patrons will be notified when the reserved item becomes available. Items not picked up in 3 days are given to the next person in the reserve queue.
